As President/CEO I requested Judy’s expertise in creating a staff development program for our Association. The Board of Directors of our YMCA, with an eye on the future, asked me to develop a succession plan for our Association. Judy developed evaluation forms to help supervisors identify potential leaders, who we refer to as “rising stars”. She also created a form for staff members to express their ambitions within the Association, including willingness to cross-train into other departments of the Y. Finally, the annual evaluation form was redesigned to include goals that would further prepare potential leaders for advancement in the Association. This process has also improved morale in the lower levels of the staff.
The process to set up the plan was intensive but rewarding. We uncovered talent throughout all levels of our Association and began to actively include them in trainings and working task forces to broaden their experience. As position vacancies have occurred, the staff development plan helped us to identify and promote appropriately.
The project that Judy B. Smetana implemented for the YMCA of the Rockies has had a significant effect on our future. The staff development plan continues to be effective in our personnel management at our association.
